Are Ups and Downs Inevitable in the Healing Process? A Personal Account

Have you ever experienced a setback during your recovery process?

It's more common than you might think. Rehab isn't always a linear journey; it's often filled with twists and turns. Let me share my recent experience with a bone stress injury to illustrate this point.

In an ideal world, the recovery process would be straightforward: get injured, rebuild, and return to full strength. However, reality is rarely so simple. Throughout your recovery, you'll likely encounter setbacks and plateaus as you gradually increase your activity level.

I recently reached a point in my recovery where I was doing too much, too soon. My shin started to bother me, and it became clear that I needed to take a step back. It was a frustrating experience, but it's important to remember that it's okay to have setbacks. The key is to respond appropriately. In my case, I simply reduced the intensity of my plyometric exercises until my shin stopped bothering me, and then gradually increased the difficulty again.

The worst thing you can do is to push through pain. If you do, you're more likely to experience a setback and have to start over. Remember, patience is key. It's better to take things slowly and avoid further injury.
